THE SHAMAN WITHIN
A Physicist’s Guide to the Deeper Dimensions of Your Life, the Universe, and Everything

Claude Poncelet, PhD

Shamanism is not about obtaining power;
it is about reconsecrating the world we live in.

For over twenty-five years, the quest to evolve shamanic practices for the modern western world has been my passion. It has been a driving force in my personal spiritual practice, in my professional life as a physicist teaching nuclear science at a major university and as an environmental policy manager in a large energy corporation, and in my work teaching shamanism in Europe, Russia and North America. The Shaman Within adapts the shamanic tradition to the natural planetary and cosmic environments, and to the complex social, economic, political, and cultural structures that characterize our modern 21st century world.

Shamanism is a powerful way to reconnect ourselves to our inner wisdom and its expression in the world. Its fundamental principles emphasize the sacredness and interconnectedness of everything, contact with the spiritual dimension of reality, and maintaining the harmony between the sacred and the secular, between man and nature. I am convinced that restoring this harmony is the only way we humans can address the multi-faceted social and ecological crises we face. Shamanism is not only an esoteric tradition belonging to certain indigenous people; it is a universal human tradition.

This book discusses shamanism as a spiritual practice and how a shamanic perspective can help us be authentic in our daily lives and in our relationships with ourselves, others, and the world around us. It offers practical tools to help reconsecrate our world and bring about harmony between the spiritual and the ordinary in our family life, professional life, relationship with nature, and our quest to contribute to society and our living planet. It describes deep practices, such as shapeshifting and the contact with spirits of objects in the cosmos, which help us manifest and live the oneness and interconnectedness of all. And because of my conviction as a physicist that there is no inconsistency between modern science and shamanism, the book highlights what I have called the reciprocity and synchronicity between scientific and shamanic knowledge. Throughout I stress the importance of ethics and impeccability in shamanic practice and our daily lives. The Shaman Within is intended for anyone who longs for meaning and spirituality in daily life, and is concerned about the increased materialization of our lives, polarization among people, and the future well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. It is about reconnecting with the shaman within.
